Mathematics

St. Peter’s Catholic Primary School recognises that maths is both a key skill within school, and a life skill given by God, to be utilised through everyday experiences. A high-quality maths education provides a firm foundation for understanding how maths is used in everyday life and activities, developing pupils’ ability to reason mathematically and make links with the needs and solidarity of others in the world around us. 

Through the teaching of maths, we aim to develop:  

  • A positive attitude towards maths and an awareness of the relevance of maths in the real world.  
  • A process of enquiry and experiment.  
  • An ability to solve problems, reason and think logically in order to work systematically and accurately. 
  • An ability to work both independently and in cooperation with others.  
  • Competence and confidence in pupils’ maths knowledge, concepts and skills. 
  • An appreciation of the creative aspects of maths and an awareness of its aesthetic appeal.

At St. Peter’s Catholic Primary School, we teach maths using a mastery approach; this sparks curiosity and excitement and helps nurture children’s confidence in maths. We also deliver intervention for children; this is to address any misconceptions picked up during lessons or pre-teaching where needed. We use White Rose Maths and a variety of other sources to support the teaching and learning of mastery in mathematics.  

Multiplication Facts 

We use Times Tables Rockstars across the school as we believe that it is important that all children become fluent and have a rapid recall of times table facts. This challenges children on age relevant multiplication and division facts and it allows children to practice and compete with their peers across the school. 

The fluent and rapid recall of multiplication facts is an essential part of learning for all pupils at St. Peter’s  and can be applied to many areas of the curriculum such as written methods, fractions and problem solving. Being able to recall these facts quickly will support our pupils to become well-rounded, competent mathematicians. 

Children are expected to know the 1, 2, 5 and 10 times table by the end of KS1 leaving the 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12 times tables to learn by the end of Year 4 when children will sit the Multiplication Table Check which became  statutory from June 2022. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1116420/2023_Information_for_parents_Multiplication_tables_check_Nov_22_PDFA.pdf  

All pupils in school have a Times Table Rockstars account where they can play games and battle against their friends to help them learn their multiplication facts.
